Staff and service users from North Wales Housing's St Mary's homeless Hotel in Bangor have spent a super productive day collecting unwanted tents, camping equipment and clothing left over by festival goers at the Wakestock Festival in North Wales. Invited by organisers of the annual event, the group loaded up on leftovers and through the course of the day reclaimed some 79 pop up tents, 38 normal tents, 47 sleeping bags, 54 inflatable beds, 51 camping chairs, 45 roll mats including thermo rests, 17 pairs of wellies and eight new pillows!

All items will be stored at St Marys and redistributed to homeless rough sleepers across Bangor and surrounding areas. Due to the huge quantity of items collected, St Mary's hostel will also be sharing their load with the Gwynedd Dispersed Supported Housing team, Pendinas and Noddfa hostels, Bangor's homeless drop-in centre and Holyhead day centre.

Kerry Jones of St Mary's Hostel said: "We were literally overwhelmed by the level of leftover 'waste' at Wakestock. Our group took as much as we could collect, carry and store on the day but there was an awful lot more still there.

"This is such a brilliant result for us and our service users. As the months get colder, the need for shelter, warm clothing and blankets escalates and we struggle to be able to provide everyone with the support that they need. This collection will help not only our service users but many other nearby homeless facilities – we really are delighted."

The team worked from morning until evening and were given huge support from festival staff, organisers, security services and the general public who were all impressed that the waste was going to such good use.

Lynne Evans of North Wales Housing added: "Homelessness is a huge issue in Bangor and across North Wales and services such as ours are continually challenged to find funding and resources to give these people the support they need. We'd like to say a huge thanks to organisers at Wakestock who gave us this great opportunity and we can assure them that all items will be put to great use."
